Walking the Edge of Reality

A look behind the curtain to my world...
I Watched the Watchmen
Sunday, March 08, 2009 3:25 AM

Today, rather than wait until things were in full swing, I decided to go see Watchmen and get it out of the way.

Simply breathtaking movie, I must admit. Some comments, and I'll do my best not to spoiler anything.

- Seeing the third Star Trek trailer on the big screen with theater audio was worth the price of admission.

- The intro credits were the best I've ever seen in a long time. And I was in a crowd that looked at me funny and wondered why I laughed at some of the "cameos"; I'm guessing they don't know who the hell Andy Warhol, Ziggy Stardust and Lee Iacocca were...

- Although I can arguably understand why the original novel ending (the decimation of New York, blood flowing in rivers down the streets amidst piles of bodies, etc...) wasn't used in post-9/11 society, the fact that you can SEE the Twin Towers out Veidt's penthouse window kind of made that argument rather silly.

- The soundtrack must be awesome: any movie that can have All Along the Watchtower, 99 Luftballons and Ride of the Valkyries in it must be a keeper.

- Of all the things they changed from the novel, I wished they would have done one thing: keep Dr. Manhattan in a Speedo. Every time he came on screen au naturale, it got a reaction from everyone in the theater. And it doesn't help that he was hung like a horse.

- Actual conversation with my wife:

Her: "So how was it?"
Me: "It was fantastic."
Her: "Good, [son] wants to see it."
Me: "Uh, no, I don't think so. It's rated R." (he's 7)
Her: "Really? I thought it was like The Dark Knight. You know, from a comic book."
Me: "Well let me put it this way: you remember the movie 300?"
Her: "Yes."
Me: "Would you let him see that?"
Her: "Oh God no."
Me: "They were Boy Scouts compared to Rorschach."

They took the term "graphic novel" to an extreme. Now I don't remember the precise detail of the novel in this regard (yeah, I know it was horribly violent, but still), but there are a couple of scenes in the movie ( ***BEGIN SPOILER*** One with a meat cleaver, one with a circular saw ***END SPOILER*** ) that kind of push it way over the edge.

- Total run time of the movie is just shy of 3 hours. To be frank, I can't imagine them doing it in less time without leaving gaping holes in the plot.

All in all, awesome movie. Breathtaking in terms of visuals. To be honest, if there was ever a movie that can break the stigma of "no Academy Awards for comic book movies", this could be it.

So you put a spoiler warning on two tidbits that are meaningless if you haven't seen the movie or read the book, but not before giving away the ending of the book?

Huh.

:p
