Walking the Edge of Reality

A look behind the curtain to my world...
Star Trek (No spoilers. Promise!)

Just came back from the viewing of Star Trek, thanks to the wonderful folks at Go Live Miami.

The movie was phenomenal!!!

First of all, one thing of note: in a pre-screening such as this for a movie such as this, you can be pretty much guaranteed that 99% of the audience will be Trekkies. There might be the occasional "odd person out" who's related to a Trekkie, but no matter. Because of that audience, the atmosphere was electric, and the audience cheered and applauded at things in the movie that the average viewer, someone unfamiliar with Star Trek canon, might not appreciate.

Now, some comments. All of which I trust are NON-SPOILERS:

1) The movie is *very* true to the Star Trek original series canon. To someone that doesn't know the characters, people like Bones or Scotty might look like oddballs and loons, but I have to say that they pretty much nailed the roles. The reason they're so oddball is that they were designed that way in the first place; they're were just as wacky in the original series, and not the aged, softened up versions you've seen in the movies since.

2) If you blink, you will miss Randy Pausch's appearance. I knew it was him the second I heard him, and he blurs by the scene so fast you can't even see his face. But not only is it a fitting tribute that he be in the movie in the first place (and is listed in the credits solely as "Kelvin Crew Member"), but he pretty much gets to say the first line of the movie.

3) Slusho makes a very strong appearance, both visually (pay attention to the bar menu) and a rather direct verbal reference. And the Tagruato logo in the San Francisco skyline is much more obvious than in the trailer.

4) They do screw with time, but come on... that's not a spoiler. It wouldn't be Star Trek if they didn't! I won't elaborate on it but they handle it pretty well, and do it in a very J.J. Abrams-like style.

5) They actually use the term "alternate reality" in the movie. I laughed out loud when I heard it; I was the only one in the theater that did.

6) I was concerned that the "big bad" Nero (Eric Bana) might try to ham it up or be too much of a presence. He's actually hardly a presence at all, and barely even on screen. I think that's perfect, as it allows the movie to focus on the Enterprise crew.

I don't think I can say more without spoiling things.

All in all, I loved it. Very funny, but in a right way. The action sequences and visuals were astounding. And there were some deeply moving scenes in terms of plot as well as content; seeing the Enterprise on screen for the first time... seeing Nimoy appear... bits and pieces that really hit home for those of us that have Star Trek in our hearts.
